Built to build.
Wired to serve.

Suren Machi spent 25 years at Microsoft — from co-founding one of the earliest B2B integration startups that Microsoft acquired in 2000, through building BizTalk's interoperability platform from scratch, through leading Azure enterprise deployments across Asia-Pacific, to finishing his tenure as Group Product Manager for Iris Personalization, a privacy-safe AI personalization platform serving global enterprise audiences.

Before Microsoft, he earned a degree in Engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science — one of India's most demanding technical institutions — and spent years in ERP implementation across PeopleSoft and SAP before the cloud was a category anyone had named.

"What makes Suren unusual as a venture investor is the same thing that made him unusual at Microsoft: he doesn't just bring capital — he brings 25 years of hands-on technical architecture and enterprise delivery."

After Microsoft, rather than stepping back, he stepped forward. Into companies he founds and funds through Maarg Ventures. Into a nonprofit he manages as its director. Into elected public service in the city he calls home on the California coast.

And long before any of it was visible on a résumé: nine years feeding women at an emergency shelter in Seattle. Masala burritos, made and delivered, year after year, because someone needed to.

One more thing that belongs in the picture: Suren has been a Seattle Seahawks season ticket holder for nearly 20 years and has attended three Super Bowls. When the Seahawks lost Super Bowl XLIX on that goal-line play with seconds left, the Seattle Times found him in the crowd. "What a terrible way to lose. We almost had it. I'm just distraught." Eleven years later, Super Bowl LX delivered the redemption. The Seahawks beat the Patriots 29-13. Some things are worth waiting for.

That's who Suren Machi is. The credentials are just the record.

Current Roles

Beyond the Résumé

  • Seahawks season ticket holder — nearly 20 years
  • Attended 3 Super Bowls
  • Quoted in Seattle Times after SB 49 heartbreak
  • Recovered from the SB49 goal-line loss — SB60 redemption: Seahawks 29, Patriots 13.

Twenty-Five Years at Microsoft.
A Career That Helped Build the Cloud.

Suren's Microsoft career is not one story — it's five distinct chapters, each more consequential than the last. It begins not as an employee, but as a founder whose company Microsoft acquired. It ends as a Group Product Manager overseeing an AI personalization platform serving global audiences. Between those two points: BizTalk, Windows Server, Azure across Asia-Pacific, and the Vanguard Customer Team.

Before Microsoft, he built his enterprise foundation at Oracle as a PeopleSoft ERP developer and consultant, and earlier still as an SAP ABAP programmer — the deep systems work that informs everything that followed.

In 2000, Suren co-founded Commercia Corp — a B2B supply chain startup integrating online retailers with market makers and aggregators like Ariba and VerticalNet. Microsoft acquired it later that year. He arrived at Redmond not as a hire, but as a founder whose company Microsoft wanted badly enough to buy.

As a founding member of the B2B/Interoperability Team, Suren led program management through five consecutive releases of BizTalk Server — from 2000 to 2006R2. Every B2B protocol his team delivered was incubated from concept through commercial release.

The result: a B2B integration platform that became foundational infrastructure for enterprise Microsoft customers worldwide, and significant incremental revenue across every release cycle. More than 30 patents filed during this period.

Leading the Connected Systems Customer Advisory Team, Suren's group activated more than 20 of the largest middleware deployments on the .NET stack — generating substantial revenue and building the reference collateral that shaped how Microsoft positioned its entire enterprise platform story.

Concurrently, he served as a pro bono Technology Business Partner to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation from 2014–2018, managing a global volunteer team developing mobile education technology for communities across Africa.

Based in Singapore, Suren managed a team of more than 25 engineers and vendor resources across Australia and Asia as part of Microsoft's Azure Customer Advisory Team. His mandate: the region's most strategically important enterprise customers across retail, e-commerce, manufacturing, energy, and financial services.

More than 100 enterprise customers engaged across India, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand — the transformational commitments that established Azure as the enterprise platform of record across some of the world's most competitive technology markets.

Returning to Redmond, Suren joined the Azure Global Vanguard Customer Team — reserved for Microsoft's highest-revenue and most strategically critical cloud customers — working in direct engineering-to-engineering partnerships to transform critical workloads and drive platform innovation.

He finished his Microsoft tenure as Group Product Manager for Iris Personalization, owning the vision, roadmap, and delivery of a privacy-safe, enterprise-grade AI personalization and audience segmentation platform within Microsoft's E+D IDEAS organization.

Capital Plus Technical Depth.
That's the Difference.

Suren Machi is a technology executive, founder, and venture investor — operating across six active companies. What distinguishes his approach: he doesn't write a check and attend board meetings. He brings 25 years of hands-on platform architecture alongside his capital.

Maarg Ventures (Delaware) is the investment vehicle — a venture capital firm focused on incubating and backing technology companies across Web3, AI-driven fintech, and enterprise platforms. Two portfolio companies committed. Two deals in active development.

Maarg LLC / MaargLabs.com (Washington) is the operating company — technology staffing, custom cloud solutions, AI integrations, and enterprise delivery. Twelve years. 92+ clients. 96% retention. Independent of Maarg Ventures.

The Same Instinct,
Across Every Context.

The same person who spent 25 years building technology at Microsoft, who now backs founders and builds companies, also spent nine years making lunch for women at a shelter, four years volunteering for the Gates Foundation, and can be found on any given morning picking up trash on the shoreline.

Elected Committee Member

Parking, Traffic & Circulation Committee · City of Laguna Beach · Term through March 2027

Suren currently serves as an elected member of the Parking, Traffic, and Circulation Committee — advising City Council on parking policy, traffic management, circulation infrastructure, and transit planning for a coastal city of 23,000 residents that hosts millions of visitors annually.

But his civic concerns extend beyond committee scope. Laguna Beach draws millions of visitors each year to one of the most ecologically fragile coastlines in California. The tide pools, marine habitat, and pristine beaches that define this city's identity are not self-sustaining under that kind of pressure. Preserving that coastline for the generations who will inherit it is not a campaign position. It is a personal conviction.

If you happen to be at 1000 Steps Beach on any given morning, there is a reasonable chance you will find Suren walking the shoreline — picking up trash that has floated in from the ocean or been left behind by visitors — and disposing of it quietly, without announcement.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Pro Bono Technology Partner · 2014–2018

For four years, Suren served as a pro bono Technology Business Partner to the Gates Foundation — managing a global volunteer team developing a mobile CMS to deliver e-books via low-bandwidth smartphones to communities across Africa, focused on improving women's access to education. He also consulted on a data solution designed to identify US students qualified for advanced placement courses but not enrolled — targeting underserved students at scale.

No billing rate. No recognition requirement. Just the work.

Angeline's YWCA Shelter, Seattle

2003–2012

For nine years, Suren personally contributed to providing hot lunches — masala burritos — to women at Angeline's YWCA shelter in Seattle. Not a donation. Not a committee seat. A meal, made and delivered, year after year, for women who needed it.

"See a problem. Do something about it. Don't wait to be asked."

WLAAT.org — Women in Liberal Arts & Technology

Managing Director

The technology industry has spent decades talking about its pipeline problem and solving approximately none of it. WLAAT.org exists because Suren believes people who understand how technology systems work have a responsibility to fix the systems that keep people out of them.

As Managing Director, he oversees an organization focused on technology literacy and workforce development for women — particularly those from liberal arts backgrounds who bring exactly the cross-disciplinary thinking the industry needs and consistently fails to retain. More than 200 students and community members reached. Maarg Ventures directly funds the mission.

Suren doesn't support WLAAT. He runs it.
